“Developing Self Confidence” Chapter Four, Part Eight (final)

(from Chapter four of his new book, Practice Power - 12 Steps to Take your Business to the Next Level, reprinted by permission)
by Joseph Lukacs

Strategy #3: Change your limiting beliefs. Changing your beliefs about success and failure is really important so you can determine exactly what has been holding you back from taking your business or your profession or your practice to the next level.
Perhaps you don’t believe you deserve to be successful. So many people in our industry feel that way, holding themselves back because they are afraid of success. They fear creating a large practice because they question their ability to serve so many clients. They are not thinking about the positive aspects of having a great practice. Instead, they dwell on so many negative aspects that they lock up, unable to take action. You need you to be aware of that.
How many times are you willing to take “ no” before you get a “ yes?” What are your beliefs about asking for and receiving referrals? It is fascinating how many people are so caught up in not asking for a referral because of their beliefs. Seriously consider the following questions:
  • Do you believe you deserve to receive referrals? Creating a list of your current beliefs and asking yourself about these beliefs will either help you succeed or hold you back.
  • What do you believe about referrals?
  • What do you believe about the market?
  • What do you believe about building your practice?
  • What do you believe about client service?
You need to be aware of everything that constitutes your limiting beliefs. For example, if you believe you are not experienced enough or are too busy to service more people, beliefs such as these are limiting and hold you back.
What you need to do is take those limiting beliefs and shift them so you are taking the exact antithesis of those beliefs. Instead of concentrating on your perceived lack of experience, change that belief by realizing you have 35 years of life experience and six years in this industry, more than enough experience for most investors. Make a shift in things.
The only way to become proficient at anything is to perform the task repeatedly until you are comfortable and confident. Re member those tasks or activities from your past, when you were not 100% confident, yet you were still able to go ahead and get results? You know. Things you take for granted, like walking. Now you are extremely self-confident about walking, but wasn’t there a time in your life when you weren't as confident, back when you were a toddler?
I want you to remember that as you go through your day. If your self-confidence, on a scale from 1 to 10, is at a 4, you are struggling. That’s very dangerous. Your self-confidence must be an 8+, and ideally a 10.
There are a lot of things in the world, other than breathing and various bodily situations, that we had to learn to do. Everything we do is acquired. Everything requires self-confidence.

At this BD, they understand your independence, and that their role is only to perpetuate your success. With that said, they feel that 27 years of independence, solid financial foundation and resourceful philosophy are a perfect fit for the representative that needs no boundaries. With this BD, independence is paramount. Allowing their representatives to conduct their business without obstruction or the introduction of proprietary products is important to them.
